Introduction The cardiovascular system and the respiratory system cooperate in order to: 1. supply oxygen, which is required by cells to produce ATP 2. eliminate carbon dioxide, which produces acidity that is toxic to cells The respiratory system provides for gas exchange, i.e., the intake of oxygen and elimination of carbon dioxide, while the cardiovascular system transports these gases in the blood between the lungs and the body’s cells. Failure of either system results in rapid death due to oxygen starvation and accumulation of waste molecules. 2
