Chapter 1 Definitions: Society: A collection of people living in a defined geographic territory and united by a political system and a shared sense of self- identification Culture: Consists of the ways of life that people create as they participate in a group or society. Ideology: Are webs of ideas and beliefs that people use to give meaning to the world and make sense of their experiences. According to lecture: Set of ideas that serve the interests of the dominant group but come to be understood and taken up as the societal common sense about the way things naturally are and thus should remain. Hegemony: A fairly complex system of ideological dominance that works through the apparent complicity of those disenfranchised by it. For example: Gender-female: "Oh we are weak and emotional" thus falling into the stereotype. Sports: Are institutionalized competitive activities that involve rigorous physical exertion or the use of relatively complex physical skills by participants motivated by internal and external rewards.
