What is public health? The science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health. Distinguishing the difference o Community health Includes both private and public efforts of individuals, groups, and organizations to promote, protect, and preserve the health of those in the community o Public health The sum of all official (gov.) efforts to promote, protect, and preserve the people’s health Public health in us o The department of health and human services is the principle agency for protecting the health of all Americans Comprising 12 operating divisions, HHS’s responsibilities includes public health, biomedical research, Medicare, and Medicaid, welfare etc. . Office of surgeon general o Americas chief health educator, giving Americans the best scientific info on how to improve their health and reduce the risk of illness and injury o Eliminate health disparities o Health literacy- how people access, understand, and use this information
