129819Dante's Inferno- Ranking of Moral Failures Through HellAdrian, Block 4October 21, 2016In Dante's poem, Inferno, malice and fraud make up the last section of Hell because Dante wants to punish the fraudulent people who exiled him in the most severe manner. In the first section of Hell Dante writes about the people whose incontinence cause their damnation. Dante sees these individuals as sinners because they lack self control. Dante has a problem with this because he thinks that if one can not control oneself then they have no control over their life. Dante also thinks that if one does not have control over their life then they make the conscious choice to sin. Dante uses the case of Francesca and Paolo as an example of incontinence. Despite Francesca being promised to her lover's brother and Paolo being married with children, the two lack control over their lustful urges and have an affair (As noted by Ciardi 42).
