Hugh McCormickCG 1October 20, 2016Journal Assignment Chapter 71.Think of one of your courses in which you’re having trouble taking useful notes. Now write down some ideas from this chapter that may help you improve your notetaking in that course.I’m a journalism major here at Cabrillo, and most of the classes I’m taking aresomewhat relayed to the field of journalism. I’m only really taking two classes oncampus; mass media studies and communication process. The communication classis pretty straightforward to take notes fork, but note taking for the mass media classid proving difficult. I was looking forward to reading this chapter in the Gardner textbecause note taking is not one of my best skills as a student. Chapter seven gaveme a bunch of ideas that could help me improve my note taking in mass media andlife in general. I’m having trouble staying in that happy medium of covering all theimportant points of the mass media lecture and writing too much. I’m havingtrouble finding out what is the important stuff and what is extraneous informationthat might bog down my brain. Basically I’m worried about writing down too muchstuff. I’m having this problem because my professor Rachel likes to include littlefacts and minutia in her exams, and I’m having problems distinguishing betweenimportant stuff and other random facts and figures. When everything is important itleaves my pages filled with more than I can hope to remember. I need to try not towrite down everything, and “focus my note taking on the main ideas” (Gardner, pg.146). I feel like I need to slow down and think about the information instead oftrying to write everything down. If I slow down, I’ll be able to think about whatRachel is saying instead of trying to catch and write down everything at once. Herlectures are disorganized and now I know “it’s your job to try to organize what issaid into general and specific frameworks” (Gardner, pg. 147). I know that if I talk toher after class or go into office hours I can ask her what is the important stuff andwhat is just filler. Right now I’m taking notes for all of my classes in the same binder.I think if I keep my “notes and supplementary materials for each course in aseparate 3 ring binder” (Gardner, pg. 137) I’ll be able to review my notes moreeasily and process more information. Before class I can take out each binder andreview my notes before each class. This will help me remember more informationand tie the current class into what was covered in the previous class.
2. How might a study group help you improve your note taking and other studyhabits? Is there a possibility that you might join one? Jot down the names ofstudents in your classes whom you admire for their academic achievements. Askone of them if he or she is interested in forming a group. If that person alreadybelongs to a group, ask if you might join.
