Radtke, Connor ENG 123 Ryan, Steve 25-Aug-16 Summary of “NAACP Report Reveals Disparate Impact of Coal-Fired Power Plants” Following a major research study, the NAACP posits that low income people and people of color are more frequently exposed to the pollution that surrounds coal power plants. Specifically, they discuss the “health, economic and environmental impacts of coal pollution on those who can least afford it-low income communities and communities of color” and suggest that these individuals are trapped in this environment. The NAACP also reports that “coal pollution is literally killing low income communities and communities of color” by placing these communities at a higher risk for asthma attacks, lung inflammation, chronic bronchitis, irregular heart conditions and birth defects. These at risk individuals who are subjected to these coal pollutants make approximately 3,200 dollars less than the national average which subsequently gives them less money to address these greater health risks.
