The Opium Wars occurred when many conflicts continued to build and eventually the strawthat started the war was the disagreement of Chinese to let the Europeans set up zones ofresidence in defiance of Chinese sovereignty, along with also wanting to proselytizeand open schools up. The war outbreak lessened the emperor’s power in keeping order and taking taxes in order to pay off loans other countries had given the Chinese. The Opium Wars contributed strongly to European countries sieging more control over China and theirtrade. Leopold II contributed to the creation of imperialism by sending in a group of paid Belgians to take control of the very fertile land along the Congo River. This group was named the International Association for the Exploration and Civilization of the Congo. In 1876, they signed treaties with locals that opened the entire Congo River basin to commercial usage. Leopold II created a group that gave Europe many resources. The Congress of Berlin was a big influencer on trade and navigation. 2.What was the Monroe Doctrine? The Monroe Doctrine was a doctrine created in the United States to enforce that European disrupting or intervening in the Americas was going to be seen as hostile movements. The United States used the Spanish American War by giving them the power to annex Puerto Rico, protected and controlled Cuba, and then eventually gains the trust of the rebels to create a republic while they were building the Panama Canal. The Panama Canal then wenton to seal United States’ dominance of the seas. The United States also expanded its influence on the world by gaining power in Hawaii and Santo Domingo.
