A gene is the unit of inheritance. What is Mendel’s First Law of Inheritance? Can you describe the law? The law of segrigation, meiosis separates paired genes si tgat ibky one pair is present in a gamete. In addition, each gamete has an equal chance of possessing either of the two genes. What is Mendel’s Second Law of Inheritance? Can you describe the law? The law of independent assortment. Unlinked genes assort independently and aer randomly distributed in gametes. What is an allele? Recessive or dominant trait of a gene. How are the concepts of alleles and loci related? Alleles are the the type of gene and the loci is where that allele is located on the chromosome. What does it mean if we say that a gene is recessive? Alleles whose expression are masked by dominant alleles are recessive and are designated with a lowercase letter. What does it mean if we say that a gene is dominant? Alleles that mask the exression of there homologues are dominant and are designated by a capital letter. What do we mean when we say that an individual is homozygous? HH, hh
