[Reference to Koko] DACDIP Discreteness Arbitrariness Cultural transmission Interchangeability Productivity -Apes: *Can’t use sentences (limited productivity) *Must be explicitly taught -Humans: *Can produce infinite # of sentences *Need not be taught Daniel’s ch.1: Fact #1— “Children learn their native language swiftly, efficiently, and largely without instruction.” Fact #2-- “Language operates by rules” Fact #3-- “All languages have a sound system, a vocabulary system, and a system of grammar.” Daniels Fact #3: Sound system (phonology) Vocabulary (lexicon) Grammar (syntax) Grammar: Prescriptive grammar—prescribes rules governing what people should/n’t say Descriptive grammar—describes the rules that govern what people do or can say Prescriptive rules: “don’t end a sentence w/ a preposition/ double negative”
