April 30, 2008 Today: -Announcement: Fri. office hrs: 9:30-11:30 -Conclude ASL and the brain -The relationship between language and thought -Sapir-Whorf hypothesis ~ASL and the brain -How is sign language affected by left hemisphere damage? *Broca’s aphasia: slow, halting signs w/ improper inflection; good comprehension *Wernicke’s aphasia: fluent but nonsensical signing; poor comprehension ~ASL and the brain What happens w/ right hemisphere damage? ~”Left (hemispatial) neglect” -Result from right hemisphere damage -Affected patients neglect left side of body, left side of visual field -Impaired spatial understanding and recognition/use of facial expressions ~ASL and Left Neglect -ASL users with left neglect can use left side of body and use of facial expressions solely for signing ASL syntax Demonstrates abstractness of language and its independence from the modality in which it is expressed (language in left side of brain; doesn’t matter how language is expressed) ~Whistling language
