Aitchison’s third characteristic in his list of biologically triggered behavior is that the emergence of behavior isn’t “triggered by external events (though the surrounding environment must be sufficiently “rich” for it to develop adequately).” This relates to the story by Moskowitz in how the hearing child of deaf parents was unable to learn to speak, and was only able to sign.
