How will evaluative concerns affect people’s interactions with outgroup members? -It depends on their baseline or typical response to the outgroup. OVERVIEW What paradigm was used? -p.387 STUDY 1 How did they operationalize concern? -Measured PSC. Public self-consciousness: tendency to worry about how others will evaluate us. What effect does PSC have on people’s beliefs/attitudes? -Moderating effect on explicit reports of beliefs and attitudes. What does this imply for our hypothesis? -Should agree with it. Why did they include an in-group comparison condition? -To see if participants’ behavior was a reaction to outgroup status or simply a normal social behavior for that person. Why did they measure social anxiety? -Because social anxiety is known to reduce intimacy-building behavior. Did the results agree with the hypothesis? -Yes. Then why did they conduct further studies? -Study 1 used a measure of chronic evaluative concern. The other studies were designed to see if the same results could be observed when evaluative concern was situational. STUDY 2
