Chapter 1: The Chemical World 1.1 o Soda Pop Fizz Carbon Dioxide is a straight molecule of 1 carbon atom in between 2 oxygen atoms Water is a bent molecule of 1 oxygen atom between 2 hydrogen atoms 1.2 o Chemicals compose ordinary things Chemicals compose the air we breathe and the water we drink. Chemicals make up virtually everything we come into contact with. 1.3 o All things are made of atoms and molecules Chemistry: The science that seeks to understand what matter does by studying what atoms and molecules do. 1.4 o The scientific method: How chemists think Scientific method : a way of learning that emphasizes observation and experimentation to understand the world. Key Characteristics: Observation of nature Formulation of hypotheses Testing of hypotheses by experiment Formulation of laws and theories Observation: The first step in the scientific method. An observation must measure or describe something about the physical world Hypothesis: a tentative interpretation or explanation of the observations.
