01.17.08 Japanese Political History Japan begins with the immigration of people from Korea, calling themselves Yamato Came from Korea and conquered the indigenous people Emishi (people before Yamato, indigenous people) Northern Japan Japan was a backward place, China was the center of power Japanese didn’t have control over entire island even until 17 th century Still divided with various people, some spoke Russian Japan created through use of force by the Yamato people but also time Japanese Names and Language Family name FIRST, given name SECOND Older names: Minamoto “no” Yoritomo “no” means “of” Language Katakana, Hiragana(decline grammatical), and Kanji(more complicated) --- “no” Kami Lord Japanese Religion Shintoism “way of the ogds” operation by which authorities Ask the gods for favors (disorganized until modern era) Not a national religion, practices different) Buddhism (various sects) greater vehicle save everyone rather than a few selected Daoism, Confucianism (Chinese religions)
