Johnny Worrall EpSci 118A The idea of a man-made geological epoch was first popularized by Paul Crutzen in 2000. I think an Anthropocene epoch has begun because evidence of mankind will last for quite some time and within the last few hundred years, humanity began impacting Earth’s environment. If all of humanity were to perish today, there would still be plenty of evidence of mankind’s brief reign on Earth, millions of years from now. Human artifacts, bodies, and who knows what else, would be preserved and possibly fossilized, whether in tar, ice, mud, tree resin, sedimentary rocks, or metamorphic rocks. Not to mention, plastic is used in practically everything and certain plastics can take up to a 450 years to naturally decompose. (4.) Glass is also heavily used and glass can take up to one million years to decompose. (4.) Although, that alone does not prove nor necessitate a redefinition of geologic epochs.
