3. Explain why Dow’s share prize fell 4.2% in 23 minutes on December 3, 2004. (2 marks) The correct answer is something like: Due to a hoax. Someone pretended to be a representative of Dow and told on the BBC news that Dow chemical will take responsibility of the Bopal disaster. As such, it will provide financial support for the clean-up of the contaminated site and compensate the victims of this disaster. Give ONE MARK when the answer indicates that this was a hoax or that someone pretended to be a representative of Dow. Give ONE ADDIITONAL MARK when the answer indicated that it was suggested that Dow was responsible for the disaster or that it was suggested that Dow will provide financial support to India, or that Dow will provide financial support to clean up the site or that Dow will provide financial suppor to the victims. Note: If the answer did not indicate the above but did mention the Bopal disaster, give one point as well. 4. Describe the exact reason why benzo(a)pyrene causes lung cancer (hint: Dr. Moon-shong Tang 1996). (3 marks) The correct answer is something like: benzo(a)pyrene damages the P53 gene (give TWO MARKS for mentioning the P53 gene). The P53 gene “fights” cancer. If it is damaged it cannot “fight” cancer (give ONE MARK for mentioning that the P53 gene “fights” cancer). 5. Explain the term mithridatic mixture” and its connection with King Mithridates VI of Pontus (132-63 BC). (2 marks) The correct answer is something like: King Mithridates was so fearful of assassination that he regularly ingested a mixture of 36 poisons (give ONE MARK for mentioning that King Mithridates regularly ingested poisons – students do not have to indicate that
