Week 7A Lecture Notes 11-14-05 Celebrations and Festivals Celebrations : Transform the every day into the special or marked (framed). -Often framed by the symbols we use (jack-o-lantern for Halloween) - Can take over public space for brief time and make it their own -2 types of celebrations: life cycle celebrations and calendrical celebrations - life cycle celebrations : cultural or religious. Generally only happen once. Ex. Chart in chronological order 1) Baptism or bris (Jewish circumcision) 2) 1 st holiday season and 1 st 100 days (ways to welcome children into the community) 3) confirmation / barmitzvah 4) Prom, sweet sixteen, quincienera 5)graduation; marked by special 6) Married and fist get alcohol- twenty first bday 7)wedding 8) baby shower 9)retirement funerals- are performed for the funeral bc dead person not there. Help survivors get through grief. Celebration of life. Possibly open casket. -There are many euphuisms about death (kicking the bucket, passing away) If there are many for something it means people aren’t comfortable about the subject.
