Module B - Tubes and Aerosols Objectives After completing this module, the successful student will be able to: Define three types of tubes – Metal – Plastic - Laminated List 10 products that are normally packaged in tubes List the market distribution of various types of tubes Discuss differences in use of tubes in the US and other countries Discuss the reasons for the use of collapsible tubes for packaging pharmaceutical products List several food products that can be found packaged in tubes in foreign countries that are uncommon in the US Define several types of aerosol packages List several aerosol propellants List and identify the parts of a conventional aerosol package Tell the history of the development of aerosols Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of aerosols Tubes and aerosols are examples of specialty packages. Tubes are a convenient package form that is used for a variety of products, some of which have special requirements. Similarly, aerosols are used for a variety of products, most of which require a particular mode of application. Each package form will be discussed in this module. There are other forms of specialty packaging, but they will not be discussed in this course TUBES Tubes are a common form of packaging and are familiar to most people. The application that is probably most familiar to most people is the ordinary toothpaste tube. However, there are many other products that are commonly packaged in tubes, such as artists’ paints, specialty lubricants, adhesives, cosmetic makeup, medications, and food products. The applications for tubes are considerably different in some other countries. In European countries, for example, the use of tubes for food products is much more common. If you have the opportunity to travel to another country, visit grocery stores and other stores to see the various package forms that are used. An example is peanut butter and jam in tubes which can be purchased in London and other parts of the UK. 1

For many years, the Tube Council , an organization which represents tube manufacturers and users in the US, has been involved in efforts to expand the use of tubes. They encourage manufacturers to expand the set of products which are marketed in tubes. There have been contests, incentive programs, and other efforts to get manufacturers to put a wider variety of products in tubes. However, while there are many millions of tubes made and sold each year, their use in the US continues to be restricted by the unwillingness of consumers to accept a wider variety of products, especially food, in tubes.
