Chris Morita WAC 22 11/18/2005 Week 7 Summaries and Questions (CR) Holidays in America: Ritual, Festival, and Celebration Many holidays have a religious base but are practiced by the entire nation. Holidays, combined with birthdays and other events help to define the year for many people. Also holidays can help to bring the family together and keep bonds strong. They were created around seasonal time, and their presence allows us to know which season we're in. They occur around the time of solstices and equinoxes, although with the changing of the calendar most don’t fall on the exact days. It is weird how often times regular rules don’t into play during certain celebrations. An example was Georgetown winning the NCAA championship and having a huge party at the same time as Lent, at a Jesuit university. Seasonal and holiday cycles are big for business, most of which have a make or break period right before Christmas. In certain summer societies they relive the holidays such as Saint Patrick’s Day in order to have a reason to party with this group. This is because Saint Patrick’s Day is seen as this type of holiday, yet many of the images
