Week 2/B Lecture Notes 10/13 3 Major guys for documentaries before world war 2 Flaherty romanticized past people, events Cizga Vertov- Soviets. Used misansen? Had problems with Stalin. John Grierson- get the British tradition of documentary. Romanticized future, present. Grierson idealizes subjects just usually common man. Creative treatment of reality. Most of his films sponsored by govt. Socialist. He only directed his first film, otherwise he was a producer. Worked under the empire marketing board, had ideological conflicts. Began national film board for Canada later on. Film were watching Called Industrial Britian , co-directed by Flaherty and Grierson in 1933. Grierson asked Flaherty to help him. They had a love hate relationship bc respect both ways but Flaherty would skip over political issues by filming the past. Paradogical (teaching us something) Grierson emphasizing the nationalism and the industrial age and modernization, traditions is reason for being so good. Flaherty allowed for close ups on peoples faces. Also focused on individuals. Combo of both styles. Craftsman built into
