How can we define life? -Life is an energy absorbing, self-replicating, molecular system -only current location is in Earth -Properties of life - order, reproduces, grows and develops, uses energy, responds to environment, adapts by evolution What elements is life mostly made of? -Carbon, Oxygen, Hydrogen, Nitrogen (90% of molecules in life) Why is carbon so important for life? -forms 4 covalent bonds and double/triple bondsà strong and durable -can form large and complex molecules -abundant What is DNA and what is its role in life? - made of nucleic acids -instructions to make proteins What are amino acids? -building blocks of protein How are amino acids are used in life? -20 What was L. Pasteur's discovery? - life's other property (stereochemistry) What is meant by the polarization of light? - light emanating from a source vibrates towards something and is unpolarized What is meant by life being optical active? -rotation of linearly polarized light as it travels through materials -occurs in chiral molecules. How old is the universe?
