Joshua Aymar Professor Thompson Essay 2 13 April 2015 The Harsh Prince Machiavelli presents in his famous novel, The Prince, many examples on why it is better to be a prince who is stern to his subjects rather than a prince who is loved by all. During the time this novel was written Machiavelli had lost most of his power and had written the novel in order to win favor with the new ruler of Florence, Italy. Others may see it as Machiavelli trying to show Lorenzo de’ Medici, the new ruler of Florence, the errors he made that caused him to lose his own power. Despite the actually reason why this book was written it’s idea that being harsh and cruel is most of the time better than being kind and forgiving is considered to be controversial and wrong. Although people may find his ideas controversial someone who has control over a kingdom or country should not let their feelings get in the way of their choices for the preservation of his or her kingdom thus sometimes harsh punishments and rules are necessary. In Machiavelli’s The Prince he talks about how a prince must conserve his wealth and not waste his money on unnecessary things just to gain favor with the people. The
