Raymond Bell Bence Arany AICE US History 13 th Amendment What happened? Lincoln was opposed to slavery so he decided to make an amendment to free the African- Americans from slavery. The 13 th amendment freed all African-Americans from slavery and it gave congress the power to enforce the 13 th amendment by “appropriate legislation”. This amendment was simply the gate way to complete freedom for African-Americans because it led to many other laws and amendments that gave African-Americans rights. Why it happened? The 13 th amendment was passed because President Lincoln wanted slavery to end and the Emancipation Proclamation wasn’t enough because it was only made during times of war and after the war it would not be in use because the war is over and they can’t free any other slaves in the south. After the Who benefitted? Slaves benefitted from the 13 th amendment because the recently enacted amendment symbolized that slavery would be abolished forever. This also meant that they were paid to work
