Geography 140 Lecture 11 11-6-07 The new American nationalism and the problems of a rogue superpower o Anatol Lieven, a British journalist argues that the US has become a rogue superpower, not the conservative hegemon it should be. o Argues that there are three causes of this: 1. American nationalism – American acceptionalism, good versus evil, religion 2. The leadership of the GW Bush administration and his “will to empire” 3. Traumatizing effects of 9/11 o Failures of the Rogue Superpower 1. Unilateralism has weakened American Power – shedding our traditional allies and forcing them to bend to our will, no longer derive coalition Actions are proclaimed as enhancing the state’s security end up undermining it and producing more enemies and terrorists, not less. Anti- Americanism has risen over most of the globe 2. The US went to war when it did not need to do so. (Iraq – not really Afghanistan) 3. The US has needlessly destroyed human life and wasted financial resources in Iraq
