Reid on what really annoys Europeans about US History of European views of US o Mostly elites and intellectuals disliked the US o There was Europe and there was the US – not together o Europe was morally, socially, and culturally better than the US o Why Europeans think they are superior: Morally: US has death penalty and religious fundamentalism; Europe has no death penalty and secularism Socially: US creditory capitalism and mass incarceration; Europe: considerate welfare state and idea that people that commit crimes rehabilitated Culture- US: commodified (commercial) and Puritanism and unhealthy sexuality; Europe: refined culture (high culture) and people are sophisticated and wise about sexuality as well o After Sept.11 th , Europeans gave a lot of support and felt sympathy for the US Most Europeans were willing to go to war during this time They felt the entire West was under attack and felt there was a common purpose Once the US invaded Afghanistan, Europe supported this attack; within a year, many began to criticize the US for unilateralist policies, selfishness, … Bush had US stereotypes and unpopular with Europe– death penalty, intrude in European
