Overcoming negative interdependence of identities Contact hypothesis and Israeli-Palestinian relations o Any contact improves relations – (very naïve view – original view) o Latter view: Under what conditions between groups lead to better relations (positive contact)? Equal status in the contact – (ex. Palestinian and Israeli in different classes) Very large gap in power and status between them Contact will lead to worse relations rather than better (proven in many cases and situations all over the world) Work toward same objective (ex. Palestinian and Israeli different objectives) Israeli objective – protect Israel Palestinian objective – gaining state and having nation of their own (drive Jews out) Could both benefit from common goal/aim? o US ethnic groups (common goals) Making money Sports team Prosperity of a region Aside: Super-ordinate goal – goal that encompasses wide variety of groups – a larger goal o When you identify with a group, you define your identity in opposition to another group Israeli wants to strengthen identity, than Palestinian identity should be weakened (vice
