Learn it.*** ****************************************************** Government and Democracy - Government defined: a social organization extending to the whole of society that can legitimately use force to carry out its decisions. o What separates the government from any other organization: Only the government can put you in jail, take away your freedom, and take away your property. o 83,000 and change in terms of government entities in the United States. From Washington all the way down to Opa-locka. o No such thing as "Free-Lunch" . 36 cents of each dollar goes into the running the government. Purpose of government : o 1. Maintain order . Protect our lives and stuff (property). o 2. Provision of public good . Homeland security, cleaner air, highways, libraries. o 3. Promotion of equality . Minimum wage is a great example of this. Men and women are paid the same thing. Equality of opportunity, not results. Dilemmas of government o Traditional Dilemma Freedom v. Order Sacrificing freedom to get satisfaction. Putting a curfew up for women when there's a rapist out. So after 6 they have to stay home so no one else will get raped. o Modern Dilemma Freedom v. Equality Guy wants to work at Hooter's. Women in Augusta. - Philosophical Perspectives on government John Locke o Social Contract Theorist The people make a deal with the government meaning that the people have the power to tell the government what to do in exchange for protection. If the contract is broken, people have the right to revolution. You can revolve against the government that oppresses you. Thomas Hobbes (Crabby) o The state of nature. We are looking out for ourselves and nobody else. Human nature is evil and we are all selfish, nasty, and evil (self- interested). o Without government, there will be chaos. Jean-Jacques Rousseau (Happy) o Government's like the grandmother. o Always forgiving and loving. o The government should only be there to help you. When everything is good, let it be. o The government only needs to promote the common good.
