Dear Chem 113 Student, For your benefit and mine, I have typed up this short communication to assist you with writing your formal report. This is designed to supplement, not replace, any information you have received from the big formal report talk. Stick to what they have told you regarding content of the different sections. This communication is essentially a sample formal report from a different unrelated experiment, with text imbedded to instruct you on each section with respect to style and layout (and a few content tips). Be advised that this does not include a conclusion section – I am leaving it up to you to write an appropriate conclusion for yourselves. Please feel free to contact me to ask any questions you may have, or to have me read a draft of your report. Good Luck. DETERMINATION OF THE DENSITY OF CRYSTALLINE GERMANIUM I. Introduction The purpose of this experiment was to measure the density of crystals of germanium. Since the density, ρ, is defined by ρ = M s /V s , (1) it was desired to measure the volume, V s , occupied by a known mass, M s , of the metal sample. The method involved the use of a pycnometer of known volume that was first weighed empty, then weighed containing the solid sample to be studied. The difference gave the mass of the solid, M s . Finally, the pycnometer containing the solid sample was filled with a liquid of known density and weighed again. The mass of the liquid was determined by difference and its volume calculated from the known density. Since the total volume of the pycnometer was known, the volume occupied by the solid could be determined.

INTRODUCTION The introduction should state the purpose of the experiment and give a very brief outline of the necessary theory, which is often accomplished by citing pertinent equations with references wherever appropriate. Each equation should appear on a separate line and should be part of a complete sentence. Number all equations consecutively throughout the entire report, and refer to them by number. All symbols should be clearly identified the first time they appear. Theory should be given in the present tense, anything you did experimentally should be in the past tense. Be concise when possible. Your introduction, considering what it will take to familiarize your reader with the concept of GC and state the purpose of your experiment, should be much lengthier than the one above. The intro is a perfect, if not your only, chance to state your hypothesis. II. Experimental Method The experimental method was similar to that described in the textbook (Aardvark and Zebra, 3 rd ed., Exp 13). The design of the pycnometer was different from that described in the textbook and is shown in Figure 1. Figure 1.
