HST 352 16/01/2008 13:53:00 Discuss two features of the empires established by Britain in Australia and India. What is similar and/or different bout each case. Cloth from India (cheaper when imported) Trade goods from India (not Australia) Trying to civilize India, but not aborigines o Civilize convicts is the main goal East India Company – sole purpose is trade o Governed by a group of merchants because they want to trade o Eventually becomes a part of Britain rather than a trade post Opium Wars 1839-1842 and 1856-1858 Started because Chinese gov’t doesn’t want it coming in anymore Scientific racism – Britain felt they had a duty to colonize the rest of the world o Africa, Ireland, etc (these people are lesser than the English) “we have duty to conquer and civilize them” o learned about at scientific conferences (thanks Darwin for superiority complexes) o used to justify the acquisition of empire o once they were in the empire it reaffirmed beliefs viewed through the perspective of scientific racism never given a chance o

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
