Introduction to Psychology Study Guide Ch. 4 1. Define sensation and perception. Sensation- the process of receiving, translating, and transmitting messages from the outside world to the brain Perception- the process of organizing and interpreting information received from the outside world 2. Define transduction. Transduction is the translation of energy from one for to another 3. Compare the absolute threshold and the difference threshold. The absolute threshold is the smallest magnitude of a stimulus that can be detected half the time while the difference threshold is the smallest difference between two stimuli that can be detected half the time 4. Describe sensory adaptation and give an example. Sensory adaptation is weakened magnitude of a sensation resulting from prolonged presentation of the stimulus. An example of this would be walking into a terrible smelling dorm, after a while the dorm doesn’t seem to smell as bad, this isn’t because the dorm’s stench has weakened, it’s because the receptors have tired and aren’t as sensitive to it.
