A Midsummer Night’s Dream Characters Theseus: Duke of Athens Hippolyta: Queen of the Amazons, betrothed to Theseus Egeus: Hermia’s father Hermia: Egeus’ daughter, loves Lysander Lysander: loves Hermia Helena: loves Demetrius Demetrius: loves Hermia, has father’s permission to wed her Oberon: King of the Fairies Titania: Queen of the Fairies Philostrate: Master of the Revels to Theseus Quince: carpenter Bottom: weaver Flute: bellows-mender Snout: tinker Snug: joiner Starveling: tailer Act I Scene I Theseus and Hipployta discuss their upcoming wedding. Egeus discusses with Theseus that his daughter is in love with Lysander but is suppose to marry Demetrius Hermia is informed that if she refuses to marry Demetrius she will either be killed or become a nun Lysander proposes he and Hermia run away to his aunt’s and get married Helena discusses with Hermia how she loves Demetrius but he is caught up with Hermia he does not care for her Helena decides to tell Demetrius of Lysander and Hermia’s plan to run away and marry Scene II The company meets to practice a play they wish to perform for Theseus and Hippolyta on their wedding night Quince is the leader Bottom is a very obnoxious man who believes he should play all the parts Bottom will play Pyramus Flute will play Thisby (Pyramus’s wife) Starveling will play Thisby’s mother Snout will play Phyramus’s father Snug will play the Lion’s part

2 Quince says to meet tomorrow night in the woods so that no one will see them preparing the play Act II Scene I Audience meets Puck and learns he is mischievous and likes to play tricks on humans Oberon and Titania fight because Oberon is jealous that Titania is caring for a friend’s son. The friend died in childbirth When Titania leaves Oberon instructs Puck to put magical juice on her eyes while she sleeps so that she falls in love with the first thing she sees upon waking. Oberon eavesdrops on Helena and Demetrius who have wandered into the woods
