Intro Bio 151/3 Discussion Homework -- Week of April 14, 2008 Answer questions 1 to 8 and submit your answers to the appropriate dropbox on [email protected] Monday discussions submit by midnight on Sunday. Tuesday discussion submit by midnight on Monday. Learning Objectives - Understand: 1. What an evolutionary adaptation is and how the term differs from the everyday sense of adaptation. Be able to think of examples, and understand how they evolve by natural selection. 2. Homology, be able to come up with and discuss examples of structures that are, and are not, homologous. 3. That natural selection is not a random process. 4. The distinction between Darwin’s two contributions, how one is pattern, the other process/ mechanism. 5. The difference between ‘how’ and ‘why’ questions in biology; distinguish between proximate vs. ultimate causation; the two biologies. 1. What is the dualism of Darwin? Of these, which is fact and which is theory? Explain. Evolution occurred = fact. And natural selection = mechanism of evolution = theory. These two components make up the dualism of Darwin. 2. Why is it incorrect to say, “Vertebrates evolved eyes in order to see?” This statement implies purpose to evolution. While organisms act as if they have purpose, i.e. act to survive and leave offspring, evolution by natural selection as a process is goalless. Those individuals best fit to the current circumstances survive. No future goal of such survival is implied. 3. What questions would you ask about the following systems (I and ii) if you wanted to determine: a) proximate causation – HOW QUESTIONS b) ultimate causation -- WHY QUESTIONS For example, given the following behaviors -- What questions would you need to ask to determine proximate causation for each of these observed behaviors? What questions would you need to ask to determine ultimate causation for each behavior? Consider also, what kinds of experiments or investigations you would propose to answer the questions. In each case the proximate causation should be examined by looking at HOW the organisms manage the specific behavior, etc.
