Chapter Two Study Guide Define/understand the following: Scientific Psychology: The scientific study of scientific thought or behavior. Pseudo-Psychology: A psychological practice that is false or unfounded. Survey Research: The researcher selects a sample of respondents from a population and administers a standardized questionnaire to them. The Case Study Method: A descriptive scientific method involving in-depth analysis of a single subject, usually a person. Random Selection: A procedure for selecting a sample of people to study in which everyone in the population has an equal chance of being chosen. Positive Correlation: A relationship between two variables in which both variables move in tandem. Negative Correlation: A relationship between two variables in which one variable increases as the other decreases, and vice versa. Experimental Research: Research designed to test cause-effect relationships between variables. Independent Variable: The experimental variable that the researcher manipulates.
