Name: Jian Chu Course Code: ENG 213-C (American Literature Appreciation) Instructor: Beau Golwitzer Homework: Week 1 (Entrance Essay) “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson For Me, I grew up from another country, the literature that I’ve studied during my high school back in Malaysia was Phantom of the Opera and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. This two Literature that I’ve studied before seems to be different from the short story of “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson. After reading the short story of “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson, It seriously made me think of The Hunger Games at first, but when I continued reading the story, it seems that I start switching to focused on another message: how blindly people in society can follow certain rules/traditions/rituals without questioning them. I love how unprecise the setting is, making us realize that it is something that can happen anywhere and adds a feeling of timelessness to the story.
