BioMI 290 1/25/08 Study Questions #1 Lectures 1-3 These questions are to help you better understand the material presented in lecture. We will not collect your answers. The answers will be posted Monday (afternoon) to the BioMI 290 web site. Part I. The History of Life 1) Describe the conditions of early Earth 4.2 - 3.8 billion years ago (Ga) as the first life was starting on Earth. What geological evidence shows that liquid water, which is essential for life to evolve, was present on Earth near the end of that time period? 2) Describe the Miller/Urey “organic soup” experiment. a) What did the experiment prove about the origin of organic precursor molecules and life on early Earth? b) What are some problems with the “organic soup” theory? c) What is an alternate hypothesis? 3) Most scientists agree that once organic precursors accumulated, they had to somehow polymerize, and then evolve into a cell-like organism. a) Describe how the "RNA World" theory and the theory of polymerization on mineral surfaces explain these events.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
