Samantha Giordano Professor Smith Marie Antoinette Essay 29 February 2016 Queen Marie Antoinette lived in a rather relevant period in history; the hundred year period beginning in 1750 brought about new ideas, enlightenment, and revolutions. She was a young queen, given away to the king of France’s grandson at only fifteen years old. Her sole purpose as queen was to bear an heir to the throne, which she wasn’t able to do for several years. While that was not her fault as it was her husband’s medical issue, she was blamed. Along with that, she spent lots of money on clothes and gambled quite often. She began as just an Austrian princess, not used to all the bustle and glamour of France, specifically her home at the Palace of Versaille. Due to the extreme culture shock of such an upgrade to her life in Austria, she may have not known how to handle the excessive lavishness of life at Versaille. This could cause someone to act on instinct, and not use their head on what to do, which the people of France may not have realized. The country’s money issues were blamed on her excessive amounts of spending, and there were supposedly many negative events that were linked to her. They then went on to place her and her family under house arrest, and she was then convicted of high treason, and beheaded by guillotine on the 21st of September in 1793, during the Reign of Terror.
