Samantha GiordanoProfessor SmithMarie Antoinette Essay29 February 2016Queen Marie Antoinette lived in a rather relevant period in history; the hundred yearperiod beginning in 1750 brought about new ideas, enlightenment, and revolutions. She was ayoung queen, given away to the king of France’s grandson at only fifteen years old. Her solepurpose as queen was to bear an heir to the throne, which she wasn’t able to do for several years.While that was not her fault as it was her husband’s medical issue, she was blamed. Along withthat, she spent lots of money on clothes and gambled quite often. She began as just an Austrianprincess, not used to all the bustle and glamour of France, specifically her home at the Palace ofVersaille. Due to the extreme culture shock of such an upgrade to her life in Austria, she mayhave not known how to handle the excessive lavishness of life at Versaille. This could causesomeone to act on instinct, and not use their head on what to do, which the people of France maynot have realized. The country’s money issues were blamed on her excessive amounts ofspending, and there were supposedly many negative events that were linked to her. They thenwent on to place her and her family under house arrest, and she was then convicted of hightreason, and beheaded by guillotine on the 21st of September in 1793, during the Reign of Terror.As Maximilien Robespierre said in his speech from February 5, 1794:“Hence the defection of so many ambitious or greedy men who since the point of departure haveabandoned us along the way because they did not begin the journey with the same destination in view.
