Shyness and Eye Contact At the beginning of this course, there were several objects that I needed to change with my Interpersonal Communication (IP). I was a really shy person when I got around people I did not know and the opposite sex; I usually would not say much or did not know what to say to them. I also had a problem with keeping eye contact with people when I talked to them face to face. My eyes would wonder around and the person that I was talking to most likely thought I was not listening. These were the two major places I needed to work at in my communication skills. My first goal was to get past being shy and be able to talk to people I did not know and the opposite sex better. Since I had just transferred here this spring semester I needed to meet new people and make new friends because I did not know very many people here. The second goal I had was to be able to keep good eye contact with a person throughout a conversation which would help the conversation carry on. With this class I hoped to learn to keep eye contact with others when I talked to them. This would help us carry on the conversation longer which I was not very good at doing. Usually, I had short conversations with people because I did not know what to say. But having more eye contact would hopefully allow me to listen better and carry on a conversation. This class helped my communication skills a lot by showing me ways to get past these problems and reach my goals. Interpersonal Communication helped me get past being shy and it allowed me to talk to more people. We talked in class about how shyness could put a damper on someone’s communication skills and I knew right away this applied to me. We talk about ways to get past shyness and also exercised many ways in class to help me get through my shyness. The book tells us that shyness or apprehension is cause by negative thinking (DeVito).
