1 Lab Values Sodium Expected Ranges- 135-145 mEq/L Hypernatremia Definition: Excess amount of sodium in the body. Lab values: Sodium levels greater than 146 Causes: Hypertonic tube feedings without water supplements, Hyperventilation, Diabetes Insipidus, Ingestion of over the counter drugs such as Alka-Seltzer, Inhaling large amounts of salt water, medications, certain medical conditions, and inadequate water ingestion. Symptoms: o Elevated Temperature o Weakness o Disorientation o Irritability o Restlessness o Thirst o Dry Mouth o Swollen Tongue o Thick mucus membranes o Hypotension o Tachycardia Diagnosis: Hypernatremia is often diagnosed from blood tests t hrough an electrolyte panel or total serum sodium test. If necessary, other tests will be performed. Treatment: Depends on underlying factor of disease, other treatments include more water or IV Fluids. Nursing Interventions: Monitor for cardiac manifestations of hypokalemia such as hypotension, tachycardia, weak pulse, and rhythm irregularities. Obtain specimens for analysis of altered sodium
