Three new mutations have recently been described in Drosophila melanogaster : the flightless mutation results in flies that are unable to fly, the icebox mutation lowers the sexual receptivity of females and female sterile results in lowered fertility in females. a) A female fly homozygous for the flightless mutation is mated to a wild type male fly. All the F1 flies are flightless. The reciprocal cross gives the same results. What can you conclude from these observations about the inheritance of flightless? Autosomal dominant (2 pts) b) Based on your above conclusions and using Drosophila nomenclature, assign a genetic symbol for the flightless gene (indicate mutant and wild type). Fl – flightless Fl+ - wild type (2 pts) c) A female fly that is homozygous for icebox is mated to a wild-type male fly. All the F1 flies mate normally. However, when these flies are mated to each other, the ½ of the female F2 flies have lowered sexual receptivity (icebox phenotype) and ½ are wild type. All the males are wild type. What can you conclude from these observations about the inheritance of icebox?
