Emily Ng Government Political Statement Period 10 Assisted suicide, also known as euthanasia, “allows mentally capable patients with terminal illnesses the option to seek a doctor's prescription for drugs to end their life painlessly.” (Martinez, 2015). If you saw a loved one deteriorating in excruciating pain and the choice of assisted suicide would help end his/her suffering, would you opt for it? Well currently this option is only available to residents in only five out of fifty states in America. In the other forty-five states, assisted suicide is criminalized. Recently, a California resident with terminal brain cancer, Brittany Maynard, flew to Oregon to receive physician- assisted suicide (Brittany Maynard, 2014). The fact that Maynard, at the edge of death, had to travel across state lines to die with dignity is preposterous. Religious conservatives and disability rights- activists condemned her decision even though her disease would have eventually taken control of her, making it impossible for her to die herself.
