Chemistry 14CL Winter 2008 Report Guidelines for Experiment #10 The Oxidation of Borneol to Camphor Note: The Experimental Procedures for this Experiment are provided as a Handout distributed February 14 and 15 in lab. Prelab Reports Period 1 In your prelab report for the first period include (i) The title of the experiment (ii) Reference to the experimental procedures. In addition to the handout; the assignment is adapted from Experiment 24 in Organic Laboratory Experiments 4 th Ed by J. A. Landgrebe, pages 439-441 (iii) Introduction – outline the techniques (including any synthesis, purification and identification) that you will be using in this experiment. (iv) Procedure in Flowchart Format for the entire experiment (v) Write a balanced equation for the reaction of borneol to camphor with HOCl (hypochlorite in acid going to HCl) (vi) Provide MSDS information for camphor, borneol, sodium hypochlorite Period 2 Complete Exercise 2 - 6 on the handout
