Homework #5: Medicine in the Media My health article is titled, “The No-Incision Appendectomy” and is about a new method of surgery that is still considered experimental. Surgeons would use patients’ natural openings, such as the month, vagina, or rectum, for laparoscopic surgery. The benefits of this technique are that the patients would have no external scarring, experience less pain, and recover from the surgery much more quickly. The first line of the article is, “Over the past year, U.S. doctors have made strides in the use of a technique called "natural orifice" surgery, an approach they hope will do away with the scarring, pain and the long recoveries associated with some traditional operations.” This line does give an accurate impression of the content of the article. It stated the new surgery method and why, within the next few years, it will become the standard care. Also, according to the first line, this technique is not new: it has been worked on over the past year.
