Jim McErlean Officer Bud White, portrayed by Russell Crowe, is a hardnosed detective for the L.A. police department who wears his emotions on his sleeve. He is looked at by his peers as the bruiser and enforcer of the force. Buds tactics are rarely, if ever, by the book. This seems to be the case for many of the police officers, as the movie takes place in a corrupt time for the city. White had an abusive Father, who beat and killed Bud’s mother in front of a young White. Bud has a deep seeded hate for women abusers, and is a sometimes crazed vigilante against the wife beaters of L.A. Bud white changes, as all three of the main cops change, into a theorist, not straight fighter. He desires to be a smarter officer, instead of the knock around guy the force sees him as. He wants to more of an intellectual that can serve justice, not just get results. Bud is finding it hard to think things through, but after he breaks his brawler habits, he quickly catches on to the depth of the Nite Owl killings. The combination of losing his corrupt partner and gaining a girlfriend is what turns bud into a more civilized policeman. He loses some of the anger he had before, and strives more towards justice. After he finds out Smith is orchestrating it all, he quickly finds his old self. A smooth talking, cool guy police officer Kevin Spacey is Detective Sergeant Jack Vincennes. He wants to uphold the law,

but mostly to his benefit. He also is a technical advisor on a TV show about detectives, Badge of Honor. L.A. is the perfect spot for a cop like Vincennes, who is kind of glitz and glam. Vincennes likes to be the cool guy, but can get tough and dirty if necessary. He is at all the parties, because his work on Badge of Honor. Vincennes also takes bribes from Hudgens, a writer for Hush Hush magazine. In exchange for the bribe Vincennes will arrest the rich and famous, set up by Hudgens, which makes for a juicy article. Vincennes has a change of heart when a young actor, who he previously arrested for drugs, turns up dead. He is through with the under the table money, semi sleazy ways, and wants to get to the bottom of the murder. Detective Lieutenant Ed Exley, Guy Pearce, is a brown nose young officer on the rise in the department. Exley is a thinker, not an actor or fighter. He uses politics to climb the rankings, by any means especially ratting out fellow officers. Exleys character is brilliantly portrayed to be a "hated by all" type of guy. Exley rats out officers in a fighting incident in the prison. Exley will screw anyone over including himself to get ahead, according to Bud White. Exley is a good police officer, using his intelligence to get his work done. Many of the officers are quick to act, and arrest minorities to please the press and society. Exley is about two things, fairness and justice. Justice is Exley’s middle name, and he would stop at
