-1 a. Freedom : (roughly) that agents willingly choose without any antecedent coercive factors b. Determinism : that every event is necessarily caused by prior factors (e.g., raising one’s hand) i. Compatibilism : freedom and determinism are compatible; determinism does not eliminate freedom (the term can’t be so because it can’t be free if it is caused) ii. Incompatibilism : freedom and determinism are not compatible; one precludes (makes it the case that the other can’t be) the other 1. Libertarianism : that in order for there to be genuine freedom, determinism must be false 2. Hard Determinism : that only determinism is true which necessarily precludes freedom Does free will exist? “NO” “YES” Determinism Is this free will compatible with being causally determined? “YES” “NO” Compatibilism Libertarianism II. 3 Areas of Dispute between Compatibilism and Libertarianism a. The Ability Condition : to have freedom sufficient for responsible agency, one must have the ability to choose differently from the way the agent actually does i. Compatibilist : ‘hypothetical ability’; the agent would have done otherwise had some other condition obtained (e.g., desiring to do so); we are free to will whatever we desire (but desire is determined) ii. Libertarian : ‘hypothetical ability’ is insufficient to ground responsible agency; it’s not about being free to do what we desire, but being free in our desires simpliciter ; the agent must be the origin of the act; ‘categorical ability’ to will to act; events prior do not entail acts present iii. Contrast : ‘dual ability’ which is the ability to do act A and retrain from doing act A at the same time; libertarians subscribe to dual ability, compatibilists do not (there is only one possibility) b. The Control Condition
