Bio 20B Vocab Abscisic acid - inhibits cell elongation, stimulates leaf shedding and dormancy Acid- growth hypoth - auxins effect on plant cell elong. Occurs via proton pumps that make wall more acid, thus expanding Adventitous - roots that develop from the shoot system Apical meristem -undifferentiated cells tip of stem or root, primary growth Apoplastic route - water traveling around cells Arbuscular mycorrhizae - fungi whose hyphae enter root cells of host Auxin - Indoleacetic acid, stimulates phototropism, other responses Bulkflow - movement of fluid due to pressure difference Calvin cycle - turns ATP and NADPH into sugar by reducing CO2 Carboniferous - Carotenoids - absorb light not absorbed by chlorophyll, usually red, orange,red (incl. carotenes, xanthophyll) Casparian strip-waxy layer that prevents water from entering cells of root Cohesion - water molecules cling together. Resist disruption Cohesion -tension theory- water moves up plants due to transpiration which pulls water up Collenchyma
