1. List five general reasons why fabrics are finished and then indicate one finish that would provide the effect. Example: Reason: to provide comfort: Finish: napping. 2. Why is the pretreatment of greige goods essential before dyes, pigments, or finishes are applied? Greige goods removes oils, waxes, and other lubricants, plus floor dirt or other soils picked up during processing. 3. Explain how you can distinguish between an embossed design and a woven design (dobby or jacquard) on a fabric. 4. Explain the difference between a napped fabric and a cut- pile fabric. How would you identify one from the other when examining a fabric? Pile fabrics are woven or knit with an extra yarn. Napped fabrics are fabrics that are cut in a special way to create a layered weave that is some of the strongest fabric around. You know a napped fabric by the surface of that fabric is then brushed or teased to raise the surface of the fibers up to some degree. A Cut Pile fabric woven with extra yarns, those yarns being made into lots of little loops.
