Name: Pol Arnella Roll number: BBasep15047 STATISTICS Homework Task-1 A manager for Marko Manufacturing, Inc. has recently been hearing some complaints that women are being paid less than men for the same type of work in one of their manufacturing plants. The box-plots shown below represent the annual salaries for all salaried workers in that facility (40 men and 34 women). 0 20000 40000 60000 80000 Answer the following: 1.) Would you conclude that there is a difference between the salaries of women and men in this plant? Justify your answer. Yes, there is a big difference in the salaries of men and women. First of all, the men’s salaries are more concentrated which means that there is more consistency in the amounts that they are getting meanwhile the women’s is more separated which means that there is more deviation which in the end means that there are more women getting less paid. Apart from that, we can also see that the minimum, maximum, median, mean and even the outlier, in this case, is always higher for men, which it could also be an indicator of the differences between both genders.

To find the outlier we need to follow the formula Quartile 3 + interquartile x1.5 First we need to find the interquartile= Q3-Q1 Male 52325-38500= 13825 Female 48750-22750=26000 Interquartile=13825x1.5=20737.5 interquartile= 26000x1.5=39000 52325+20737.5= 73062.5 48750+39000= 87750 13825x3= 41475 26000x3=78000 Extreme outlier= 52325 + 41475= 93800 48750+78000= 126750 With this two numbers we have just found, we can now say that the number from which the mild outliers for men start is over 73062.5 and for women that same indicator is over the 87750. The extreme outliers for men would be found after 93800 and for women 126750 We also have to say that the only outlier we have in this two boxplots is in the male’s ones with a mild outlier with a value of 78200. 3.) What can you say about the shape of the distributions given the box-plots above? What we can say about the distribution of the boxes is that meanwhile the men’s data is more consistent making a rather smaller box which means that more men are getting higher paid, the women’s one is widely distributed which means that there are more women getting lowered paid, this is because the consistency of the female’s salary is lower so there are more women getting less paid.

To learn the current degree of job satisfaction among the nurses, the association has sponsored a study of hospital nurses throughout the country. As part of this study, a sample of 50 nurses was asked to indicate their degree of satisfaction in their work, their pay, and their opportunities for promotion. Each of the three aspects of satisfaction was measured on a scale from 0 to 100, with larger values indicating higher degrees of satisfaction. The data collected also showed the type of hospital employing
