A Brief Look at Chemical Engineering and Nanotechnologies This article is an attempt to summarize research of the recent developments of nanotechnologies in the field of chemical engineering. First we hope to present to the readers a basic understanding of nanotechnology, its purposes, potentials, and its uses, as well as elaborate on the involvement of the chemical engineers in nanotechnology’s development. We have consulted a professor, Dr. Lloyd Lee of Cal Poly Pomona, who has done major research and experiments on nanotechnology, examined the library’s journals, books, and articles. Nanotechnologies are a very broad field that branches disciplines such as Biology, Physics, Chemistry and especially Chemical Engineering . Chemical Engineering deals with the application, of physical science such as chemistry, physics and mathematics. Chemical Engineering processes are used to convert raw materials or chemicals into more useful or valuable products. Chemical Engineering is also concerned with pioneering valuable new materials and techniques such as nanotechnologies. Chemical Engineering plays an important role of research and development. Chemical engineering largely involves the design and maintenance of chemical processes for large- scale manufacture. Chemical engineers in this branch are usually employed under the title of process engineer. The development of the large-scale processes characteristic of industrialized economies is chemical engineering. Truly, chemical engineers are responsible for the availability of the modern high-quality materials that are essential for running an industrial economy and future progress, including nanotechnology. Although it is very difficult to specifically name “the pioneer” in any science fields in the modern world, Eric Drexler can be called the father of Nanotechnology. Nanotechnology is a whole new concept of chemical engineering in that the scientist is able to maneuver each specific atom to be attached to a particular location in a molecule. Nanotechnology is a field of applied science focused on the design, synthesis, characterization and application of materials and devices on the nanoscale.
