Bryan (Daejin) Kim PHY131L 3/12/07 PHYSICS LAB REPORT – Conserved Quantities Equipments - meter stick - two hanging blocks of wood - laser-gate setup - computer - two slotted weight sets Procedure There were two wooden blocks hanging. We set up the laser-gate assembly so that the laser points exactly at the bottom of the arc for the wooden block, when it is swinging. We lifted one block and measured its height from the ground. As we dropped the block, the laser-gate assembly and the computer measured the velocity of the block right before impact with the other block. The computer took four values for the velocity, but for the first part of this experiment, only the first value was needed. Once the block stopped moving, we measured the height of the block at the bottom of the arc. Afterwards, we set up 6 different heights and measured the velocity from 6 different positions to find out the effect of gravity on this wooden block. For part 2, both blocks were actually used.
