Abbey Chauvin English 101 Mrs. Lewis 1 October 2016 Effects of Single Parenthood on Children In the United States, one third of children live in single parent households. Fifteen million of these children are living with a single mother, while only five million are living with single fathers. Single parenthood is an increasing problem all over the United States and can have huge effects on a child’s life. Although these effects are typically thought of as negative effects understanding the disadvantages focuses only on half of the issue: the other half is to understand the strengths and resiliency factors exhibited by children raised in single parent households.Of the many effects of single parenthood on children the categories that are most affected are those of mental health, social development, and educational success. One of the most affected categories in the development of children in single-parent households is their educational success. Many would expect the statistics to be very negative, however that doesn’t tend to be the case, and although a majority of children who graduate from high school and college do come from dual parent families, seventy percent of children from single parent homes do graduate from high school and half of them graduate from college. Numerous studies have documented the challenges faced by single parents and the disadvantages of their children in comparison to children who are raised in two parent households.
